Vernell Dvorak, age 84, of Thrall passed away Saturday April 1, 2017 at Temple Hospital after a short illness.
Vernell or more affectionately known to us as “Granny” was raised in the Hutto/Round Rock area and attended school in Hutto and graduated from Round Rock High School in 1950. She met the love of her life, James Dvorak, on a blind date. They were married on February 18, 1951 and were blessed with 58 years of happily married life together living and raising a family in Thrall. Vernell loved her family with all her heart and spoiled them with great meals after church on Sundays and never hesitated to babysit and spend time with the grandkids. She and James rarely missed an activity that their children or grandchildren were involved in. They attended all the sporting events and games that their children and grandchildren were involved in as well as dance recitals, church and school programs, graduations, and birthday parties. She greatly enjoyed all the family vacations together to places like Disneyworld and gambling trips with James. She was great with numbers and after the kids got in school she worked as a bookkeeper for Taylor Savings and Loan and then worked alongside James as his bookkeeper when they started Dvorak Motors together in Thrall. After retiring, they continued to farm together and Granny also worked as a substitute clerk at the Thrall Post Office and secretary at church as well as serving as the “First Lady” of Thrall while James served as Mayor for almost 20 years. Her kind spirit was reflected in all the love and attention she gave her family and friends as well as her pets who she loved like family. Granny was a kind, loving, welcoming, and gracious lady who worked hard and never hesitated to help when needed and was a great Christian example for her family. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Thrall where she had taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She was also a member of the Thrall Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and the Bunco Club. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James Dvorak, and her sister, Carolyn Bengtson.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Richter and husband Mike of Cameron, son James Dvorak, Jr. and wife Kimberly of Round Rock; grandchildren Kerri Hillman and husband John, Dustin Dvorak and Hilary, Darin Dvorak and wife Nicole, Stephanie Mack and husband Billy, and Amber Weed and husband Jonathan; her great-grandchildren, Kensi Hillman, Logan, Andrew, and Emily Mack; Luke, Natalie, and Anna Weed; and her sister Sherry Collins and husband John.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday April 4, 2017 form 6pm-8pm at Condra Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday April 5, 2017 at 10 am at St. John Lutheran Church in Thrall, TX. Burial will follow in Taylor City Cemetery.
