Samuel Jay Mason, Sr. was called home to be with his Lord on Friday, September 30, 2011. Sam was born on March 26, 1939 to William Pettus and Minnie Lou Cockrum Mason in Georgetown, Texas.

Sam was a native son of Texas and Georgetown spending most of his life in “old town”. Sam loved performing in “little theater” and was an avid sports fan. He was commonly seen around town at all types of sporting events. Sam coached “Pop Warner” football for many years and loved the young people of the Georgetown area. Sam worked as an office manager for over 25 years and had his own bookkeeping and consulting business after his retirement. He also worked as a substitute teacher in the Georgetown and Jarrell Independent School Districts.

Sam is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Mary Ann Mason, daughter, DeeAnn VanHouten and son, S. Jay Mason, Jr. both of Georgetown and daughter, Kathryn Hogan and husband Michael of Arlington, Texas. He is survived by eight grandchildren, Jacob VanHouten and fiancee Courtney Bright of Nashville TN, Joshua Charles VanHouten and wife Leticia and James VanHouten of Georgetown.: Katy Hogan, Dan Hogan, David Parrish, Alex Parrish, and Bridget Hogan of Arlington. He is also survived by one sister, Bertha Nichols of Houston and one great-grand son, Vance Vernon VanHouten of Georgetown and many extended family and dear friends.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of the V.A. Hospital in Temple, Texas.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Gabriels Funeral Chapel & Crematory in Georgetown. A service celebrating his life and faith will held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 7, 2011 in the chapel of the funeral home. Interment will follow in Presbyterian Cemetery.
