SIMMONS, Eugenia

Eugenia Simmons, age 86, of Austin, Texas, passed away on Thursday, September 23, 2004, after a long struggle with illness. She was the youngest of six daughters born to Henry and Clara Martin of Williamson County, Texas, on July 22, 1918. She grew up on a farm near the Lawrence Chapel community in Williamson County where attended school and church. She was married to Elva F. Simmons and had two sons. The family moved to Austin, Texas, in 1951 where she began to work at the Austin State School on West 35th Street. After the death of her husband, she sold Avon products in and around the West Austin area for many years. She truly enjoyed the friendships that she developed with many of her customers. She was a very independent strong willed and outspoken individual. Her hobbies and interests, in addition to amassing a huge Avon decanter and figurine collection, included gardening, reading, sewing, watching sporting events and cooking. She enjoyed preparing the holiday meals for her family and friends. She was blessed with many neighborhood friends, some of whom became like family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant son and her eldest son, Franklin. She was also preceded in death by all five of her sisters. Surviving her are her son, Jimmy Simmons of Austin; her grandson, Johnny Simmons and his wife, Tami, of Hutto Texas; great-grandchildren, Shaun Simmons and Staci Simmons, also of Hutto, Texas, and her sister- in-law, Vivian Simmons of Austin, Texas. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Gracy Woods I and the staff at North Austin Medical Center for their diligent and compassionate care. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 27, 2004, at the Lawrence Chapel Cemetery in Williamson County, Texas. LAWRENCE, Nannie Mae

Nannie Mae Lawrence, “Nan”, 79, longtime resident of the Structure community passed away Monday, January 28, 2008 at her residence. “Nan” was born on January 21, 1929 in Baird, Texas. The daughter of James and Othel (Curtis) Howell. She worked as an administrative assistant at the Travis State School for more than 30 years. In 1975 she married Royce Wade Lawrence who preceded her in death. Nan is also preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Sherry Gebauer, brother, Carlton Howell, and sister, Geneva Moore. She is survived by her two sons, Robert Leatherwood and wife Wendy, and Dale Leatherwood and wife Linda all of Elgin; daughter Vicky Ross and husband Darrel of Pflugerville; sister, Mozelle Barfield of Elgin; eleven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three step-sons, Ronnie, Joey and Rocky Lawrence. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 30, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Condra Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 31, 2008 in Condra Memorial Chapel, with Chaplin Raymond Williams of Vista Care Hospice officiating. The burial will follow in Lawrence Chapel cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Clayton Leatherwood, Allen Leatherwood, Lenny Leatherwood, Kenneth Wilhelm, Tracy Ross, Jon Dahl, and Jacob Reyes. KILGORE, Sally Ross

Sally Ross Kilgore, age 74, of Austin, Texas, died on November 3, 2007. Sally was born in Luling, Texas on June 13, 1933, the second of four daughters, to Clay Nichols, Jr., M.D. and Jean Ross Nichols. Sally attended Luling public schools, graduating in May of 1950. She received her BA in Home Economics-Teacher Education from the University of Texas at Austin in May of 1954. While a student at U.T. Sally was a member of The Texas Stars, a Majorette with the Longhorn band her sophomore and junior years, an advisor at the Andrews Dorm, a member of the Campus League of Women Voters, a Sweetheart finalist, a member of Caps and Gowns, Co-Ed Assembly, and a member of the Home Economics Club. She was also a member of the ALPHA DELTA PI sorority serving as President in the spring and fall semesters of 1953. After graduation Sally was employed as a Home Economist with United Gas in Houston, Texas from 1954 through 1959. In 1959 she married “Gene” Kilgore. They moved to Wichita, Kansas where she went to work with Kansas Gas and Electric. In 1960 she and Gene moved to Kansas City, Missouri. In 1961 their first child, Clay, was born. This was the beginning of Sally’s career as a mother and homemaker. Sally’s family, home, church and pets were her main interests. She was a member of Riverbend Church, an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. She and Gene took the children on a number of trips in the U.S. as well as to foreign destinations. When the children were grown she and Gene traveled frequently; mention a trip and she was ready to go. She is survived by her husband, Elmer E. “Gene” Kilgore of Austin, TX; son, Clay C. Kilgore of Fairfax, VA; son, Brian D. Kilgore and his wife Stephanie Mulqueen, their daughter, Juliette and their son Jason of Palo Alto, CA; daughter, Leslie Jean Kilgore, her husband Jonathan Leblang and their sons, Alex and Zach of Menlo Park, CA; daughter, Susan Ross Blakeney and her husband David Blakeney of Richmond, VA; sisters, Nancy Spence of Houston, TX, Ann Thomas and her husband Ray Thomas of Austin, TX, and Gail Nichols of Austin, TX. She is also survived by numerous nephews, nieces, great-nephews, and great- nieces on both sides of the family. Sally was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, William Spence of Houston, TX. The family wishes to thank all of the wonderful staff at Buckner Villas and Odyssey Hospice for the loving care they gave to Sally during her final days. Sally will be missed dearly by her family and friends. Memorial services will be held at a later date in Remembrance Gardens of Riverbend Church in Austin. Interment will be held at Lawrence Chapel Cemetery in Williamson County, Texas.
